John Hee Taek Chae is a multidisciplinary artist based in Richmond, VA. His works explore a range of topics from the historical and personal narratives that have constructed his sense of identity to the ways in which ideology determines reality. While at the Ellis Beauregard Foundation, John spent his time experimenting with new materials and processes, such as linen dying, quilting, and garment making–as well as developing a new series of paintings that explore motifs from the American West. He is interested in the term neo-settler and the relationship that second-generation immigrants of color have with the American landscape, imaginary, and the legacy of settler-colonialism.
